Product Description

SODIUM CARBOXY METHYL CELLULOSE (CMC)

Product Introduction

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), CAS number 9004-32-4, is a water-soluble anionic polymer made from natural cellulose (such as cotton fiber and wood pulp) through alkalization and etherification. Its general chemical formula is [C6H7O2(OH)(OCHCOONa)] (x+y=3, where y represents the degree of substitution). It appears as a white to slightly yellowish powder or fibrous solid. It is odorless and tasteless and easily disperses in cold or hot water to form a transparent or translucent viscous solution. It is insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ethe r, and acet one. Its solutions exhibit excellent thickening, stability, emulsification, and water retention. Its pH (1% aqueous solution) typically ranges from 6.5 to 8.5. The degree of substitution (DS) is a key parameter (typically 0.6-1.2), directly affecting properties such as water solubility and viscosity. A higher DS indicates greater water solubility and a wider range of applications. Industrial production uses refined cellulose as raw material, which is alkalized with sodium hydroxide to produce alkali cellulose, which is then etherified with sodium chloroacetate and finally made through neutralization, washing, drying, and crushing. It is divided into food grade, cosmetic grade, industrial grade and other specifications according to purity and use.

Product Usage

(1) Food industry

Thickeners and stabilizers: used in beverages (juice, lactic acid bacteria beverages), ice cream, and yogurt to increase product viscosity, prevent stratification and precipitation, and maintain a smooth taste; in jams and jellies, they can enhance gel properties and improve morphological stability.

Humectants and improvers: added to baked goods such as bread and cakes to lock in moisture, delay aging, and extend shelf life; in meat products (sausages, meatballs), it can increase water retention, improve elasticity and taste.

Emulsifier: used in salad dressings, seasoning sauces, etc. to help the oil phase and water phase mix evenly and prevent oil and water separation.

(2) Cosmetics and daily chemical industry

Skin care products: As a moisturizer and thickener, it is added to lotions, creams, and essences to form a transparent texture, reduce moisture loss, and stabilize the formula to prevent ingredient sedimentation.

Hair care products: Adjust the viscosity of shampoo and shower gel to make the product easier to pour and use, improve foam stability, and reduce irritation to the scalp and skin.

Toothpaste: Acts as a binder and thickener to form a uniform paste, prevent solid particles from settling, and enhance the smoothness when brushing.

(3) Industrial sector

Paints and inks: As thickeners and dispersants, they improve the fluidity and stability of paints and inks, prevent pigment precipitation, and enhance coating uniformity.

Papermaking industry: used for paper sizing to enhance the water resistance, strength and smoothness of paper; can also be used as a coating agent to improve the surface properties of paper.

Oil drilling: As a drilling fluid thickener and fluid loss reducer, it increases the viscosity of drilling fluid, reduces leakage of drilling fluid into the formation, and protects the stability of the well wall.

Textile industry: As a sizing agent, it forms a protective film on the yarn surface, enhancing yarn strength and reducing yarn breakage during weaving; it can also be used as a printing paste to improve the clarity of printed patterns.

Detergents: Acts as an anti-redeposition agent, preventing dirt from re-adhering to clothing during the wash process and improving soil removal.

Transportation and storage methods

(1) Packaging specifications

Conventional packaging: sealed with polyethylene plastic bags (to prevent moisture absorption) inside, and packed with composite plastic woven bags or kraft paper bags outside, net content 25kg/bag;

Customized packaging: We can provide 5kg, 10kg small packaging (aluminum foil bags or sealed cartons), or 500kg, 1000kg large packaging (ton bags) according to customer needs.

(2) Transportation requirements

Transport vehicles must be clean and dry, and avoid mixing with wet items, strong oxidizers, strong acids, strong alkalis and other chemicals to prevent products from absorbing moisture, deteriorating or being contaminated;

Handle with care during loading and unloading. Do not throw or squeeze the packaging to prevent the bag from being damaged and causing product leakage.

During transportation, measures must be taken to prevent rain, moisture and sunlight (such as covering with rainproof cloth) to prevent the product from being soaked by rain or exposed to direct sunlight.

(3) Storage requirements

Store in a cool, dry, ventilated warehouse with a temperature of 5-30°C and relative humidity ≤75%, away from heat, water and fire sources;

Products should be stacked on pallets, ≥10cm away from the ground and walls to avoid direct contact with the ground and moisture absorption;

The shelf life of unopened products is 24 months (from the date of production). After opening, they must be sealed immediately to avoid prolonged exposure to air to prevent moisture absorption and caking.

FAQ

1. What should I do if CMC clumps when dissolved?

Before dissolving, you can first mix CMC with a small amount of dry powder such as white sugar and salt (pretreatment), then slowly add it to water and stir, or use the method of "adding powder while stirring" to prevent the powder from sinking directly to the bottom of the water and agglomerating; you can also add cold water to disperse it first, and then heat it to 50-60ºC to accelerate dissolution.

2. What are the differences in the uses of CMC with different degrees of substitution?

CMC with a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.9-1.2 has good water solubility and stable viscosity, making it suitable for the food and cosmetics industries. CMC with a DS of 0.6-0.8 has poor water solubility but is lower in cost and is mostly used in industrial-grade scenarios (such as papermaking and coatings). The specific degree of substitution specification should be selected based on the product formulation requirements.

3. Is food-grade CMC safe?

Food-grade CMC has been certified by authoritative organizations such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) and the US FDA. In my country, it complies with the requirements of GB 1886.232-2021 "National Food Safety Standard Food Additive Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose". Reasonable use will not cause harm to human health, and there is no special limit on the daily intake (ADI).

4. What factors affect the viscosity of CMC solution?

It is mainly affected by concentration (the higher the concentration, the greater the viscosity), temperature (the higher the temperature, the lower the viscosity), pH value (the viscosity is stable in a neutral or weakly alkaline environment, and strong acids/strong bases will destroy the structure and cause the viscosity to decrease), and electrolytes (high concentrations of salts will reduce viscosity). Conditions need to be adjusted according to the scenario during use.

5. Can agglomerated CMC still be used?

If there is only slight clumping (no discoloration or odor), the lumps can be crushed and dissolved. If the solution is transparent and free of impurities, it will not affect the use. If there is severe clumping and accompanied by discoloration and odor, it means that it may have absorbed moisture and deteriorated. Do not use it.
